I agree with them banning it from public places like restaurants etc. But when it comes to pubs and clubs, i seriously don't think it will work. 80% of the people that go to them smoke and i can see a lot of people getting arrested or banned over it. How do they think they're goin to stop drunk lads etc lighting up on a nite out!! Will be very interesting to read/hear the stories to come!

lady p (24/05/2007)
Just to jump on the soap box, I think its disgusting, I think if the owner of the premises wants to have people in there smoking then thats up to them, its up to a smoker to walk into a smoke filled room but to ban us the privilage of getting it smokey is disgusting, I really do think this is against my human rights to stop me smoking when I go out for a pint.  I can buy them legally but I cant smoke them, its disgusting I am fuming about it and very very annoyed.  Next they will be saying you can buy booze but you may be charged with binge drinking so you can only have 2 bit like buying asprin in Tescos (you can only buy two boxes at a time).

Then they will be banning bloody canabis. They are taking all my vice's away

Well LadyP, welcome back!!!

I think you've missed the point on the Asprin side. Honest to god, the reason for that is they don't want to contribute to someones suicide. I used to work there and I was told that buy managment.

Anyways, look at it from the flipside. If you're a non-smoker, why should you have to put up with smoke? It's not fair to make people breathe your smoke, and essentially, that's what we're doing. Because it's an enclosed space, it can't escape. A/C units don't filter the air, only blow it around so they don't help. An open window does something at least, but it won't get rid of the smell. The whole reason for this ban is because of the second hand smoke issue. Non-smokers enjoy a drink as well, but they don't want to have to sit there and put up with us smoking around them, and I can understand that.

I'm all for this ban. It'll help me to quit, and I can go up my local for a drink without smelling so bad when I come home.

I understand your point LadyP, but I think the majority of the country (and a fair few smokers) will be behind this ban. Besides, it's not like we can't go outside and have a puff.

Although I support the ban for personal reasons, as a recent giver-upper I'm about half-way to Lady P on this.  Smoking isn't like child abuse or terrorism - it's not something that must be stamped out at all costs and to hell with everyone's rights.

I favour a segregated system.  Smoking banned from all public buildings (e.g. workplaces, libraries, council offices etc).  All leisure premises (pubs, restaurants, clubs etc) to formally declare their status and place a clearly visible notice at all entrances:

  • This establishment is 100% non-smoking
  • This establishment allows smoking
  • This establishment has segregated smoking areas

Then anyone can see clearly when the score is before they set foot on the premises.  If someone wants a smoke-free environment, go for the non-smoking places. If you don't mind either way, use either of the others.  The market will soon sort out which type of establishment is the more popular, and proprietors will then change the status of their premises to gain the most customers.  If smoke-free places are as popular as the non-smoking people predict, almost all premises will follow the money/customers.

I remember a pub in Appletreewick, near Leeds, going non-smoking back in the 70s.  It was unique, and the event made all the local papers.  It lasted about a week.

Well, i read in the news today that clubs are installing new air fresheners to pump out either strawberry, vanilla, & (something else?!!!) smells!!. They reacon that once the ban takes hold in a few weeks, new smells will surface, like vomit, toilet smells, etc. Nice eh! I doubt it'll be very popular tho, as tbh a smell like that all nite will make me feel ill lol, let alone what drunks will think of it!!

What do you guy's think? I seriously don't think they'll need it, but thats me

Pubs will be ok I think. You can just step outside and have a ciggy, go back in and drink, repeat the process.

Clubs, on the other hand, are going to suffer. If there is no smoking in a public building then how will the serious smokers cope without their beloved 'fag'? The doormen aren't going to be letting people out to have a smoke, then let them back in again. Peple will stop going because of the ban, they'll hit the bars and pubs (which could stay open along with the clubs as somkers will want to stay out later) so that way they can drink and smoke.

Bingo halls will be hit too. More people will stay home and play online so they can smoke to their own content.

It is a tough job. I have seen it many time. all the habits people can not give up so easily. It is near to impossible. If you try heard you will be successful. By the way i am also a smoker. I do not want to try to smoke free.
