BD, I always tend to refer to them as CDIs (probably because that's all they were when I did most of my learning about what engine parts were!) even though most of them are ECUs now...so I was just correcting myself that your description of ECU was the more accurate one! Anyhow, it's the same physical black box, whichever (loosely interchangeable) acronym is used - hope that clears up any confusion on the part of any readers*... !It isn't particularly complicated, Mazz - just a box with a solid one-way fit connector block. They're not user-serviceable, so if it's shot, it's replacement time. Easy to swap in a known good one (such as your dad's!) for testing purposes: just plug it in. But if you've got someone who can sort the problem for you straightaway, so much the better! (* Kind of nice to be able to use the plural, for a change, isn't it?)
