Hi all!

hopefully you lot can help me. I'm looking to start biking before the end of the year, which means purchasing a bike.

I have read reviews about the Honda CG125 and found that it sounds like a really good starter bike! However :

 - Does it have any storage on it?

 - Will it be ok with 14st worth of me on it?

 - I'm looking to spend no more than £700, would this be enough to get a decent bike?

 - Is there any security on it and what would you recommend lock wise?

Many thanks

Rich

Good for you, chap: hope you enjoy two wheels.

The CG's a fine choice for a starter: as good an all-rounder as you'll find in the 125 bracket.

- Storage, depending on model, is a small and not particularly convenient underseat tray. If you're planning to carry anything sizeable it'll be rucksack, or fit a carrier rack plus cargo net. Always worth looking for a bike with rack already fitted when you come to buy

- It'll cope as well as any 125 will! You should be able to tell quickly enough if the suspension's struggling at either end: it's possible to fit replacement rear shocks if the originals are past their best and to put thicker for oil/stiffer springs in the front forks if they're too soft. Test ride before you buy: or at least bounce on the bike a few times to see if anything clunks loudly

- That should get you up into the "W" model bracket: sometime around 98-00. Don't worry too much about age, though: condition's more important. Look for clean, tidy and low-ish mileage, try and avoid the Brazilian-made ones if possible. There's loads of them out there, so don't feel you need to buy the first one that comes along

- Steering lock only. For parking at home, lock and big chain, preferably attached to a ground anchor. For portable security, depends on model - if it's got a front disc brake, disc lock's probably most convenient; if it's a drum front, you'll probably need a U-shackle. Look for either Sold Secure or Thatcham Approved kit (you'll probably get an insurance premium discount for them as well as added security). I use Abus and Cisa products, but they do cost - Oxford do some reasonably-priced alternatives. Visit a dealer and take a look at the physical sizes: a lock's no good if you're not going to be able to carry it around with you. Or try M&P online for better prices

A CG is a great choice for a bike. make sure it's a Honda though. You'll find a lot of Tiawan and Chinese replica bikes that cost less than a Honda, but that's because the build quality is cheaper.

make sure it's definately a Honda and it'll see you through the whole year with minimal maintainence. And by minimal I mean Oil change, spark plugs and general stuff. You shouldn't have to make massive changes to anything. The engine is bullet proof (because it's Honda) and although it's not the nicest looking 125 out there, I can guarentee you'll be riding it for a lot longer than other 125's as they will have broken!
