Hi,

Currently riding an 03 plate faired Bandit but looking at doubling my commute to 75 miles each way.  Any suggestions on a bigger bike?  Pre reqs are:

bigger screen

tank range of up to 200 (dont fancy getting nervous for the last 10 miles each day)

enough poke to be interesting but unlikely to go swinging about B roads unless diverted

not as wide as a bus so i can filter - road becomes a car park near destination

thoughts welcome.

I ride a 54 plate Triumph RS Sprint 955i and with a double bubble screen I rekon it would suit long commutes. I also know that if riden with respect and little throttle blipping it would make 200 miles as well. I don't have to commute long distance (I only work 7 miles from the house) but do like to take it out for a while at the weekends, I can ride for 3/4 hours without even thinking about the tank being empty. Whatever bike you decide on will be your choice as we all have our favorites for each style of riding. Endem and Hoov will probably have the best input into the solution for you. Goodluck in finding something.

That's quite a hefty distance to be racking up (all year round?), so I guess you'd also be wanting low maintenance and high reliability. Not a bad idea to pick a big horsepower engine - not because it'll give you an academic 180+ top end, but because at ordinary road speeds it'll be almost completely unstressed.

A lot depends on what sort of ergonomics you want - most anything can be fitted with a taller screen, if the riding position's good to start with - how much weight you're comfortable handling and what sort of budget you're on.

I'd probably look in the hyper-sports-touring department, personally: Honda Super Blackbird or Pan European, Suzuki Hayabusa, Yamaha FJR - or a low-mileage Yamaha Thunderace or Kawasaki ZZR1100, if money's tight.

Supermotard/Retro style isn't too bad for distance work either. If you get on with shaft drives and the car park part of the route isn't too tightly packed, it might be worth looking at a BMW, something like the R1150GS. Alternatives might be Suzuki's DL1000, Yamaha TDM900, Triumph Tiger, perhaps a Kawasaki ZRX1200S.

Finally, there's the sort of utilitarian everyday bracket - the evergreen Honda VFR, various Triumph Sprint/RS models, the Bandit 1200, new Honda CB1000F.

Probably best to avoid the real bargain-basement, such as older Bandits, Diversions and so on: build quaity wasn't up to much.

Ideally, test-ride a few different styles and see what really suits (it's not just the mechanics - you want to still be able to walk when you get to work!). You might find, for example, that hypersports work for you: such as early 00's GSXR1000/Fireblades - when they were still roomy and comfortable - which were good for stellar mileages.

Any of that lot sound like what you'd be after? A better idea of that would help with more specific advice!

I was going to add the 1200 faired Bandit - I ran one for a year and it was completely reliable and would cope with your journey no problem. But the tank range wasn't too good - I seem to remember about 140 miles. That would mean filling up twice a day.

I've come across a Pan European with 340,000 miles and still going strong. And a Wing with 125,000 miles that hasn't had any engine work on it, even the clutch is original. Which considering the owner has done many mountain miles two up with a trailer is doing well.
