Hi all,

Apologies, haven't been on for a few months......

Having passed DAS in July I was enjoying getting miles in on my 96 RF600, getting confidence etc and then rode it in the rain.... After a few miles in heavy rain it cut out, no ignition lights but headlights working etc Spent ages trying to start it and ran battery flat like an idiot. RAC man's jump leads started it 1st time after an hour's wait then no probs home again. Just put it down to rain. Then it happened again on a dry evening, keft it for 15 mins and started 1st time, no probs 35 miles home. A biking mate suggested new plugs, check coils, leads etc I did all this and cleaned all the electrics than sprayed liberally with damp seal. I then rode from South Glos to Cumbria on a drizzly Saturday where it ran perfectly only to cut out after about 200 miles, same again, no ignition lights no firing on starter, however after about 10 mins tried it on full choke and it would run poorly but if throttle touched or choke off it cut out again. Then further 10 mins started 1st time no probs last 50 miles. Rode home 250 miles day after not a hiccup (except for my aches and pains that is 500 miles in 2 days in November was not comfortable).

Anyone got any suggestions? Has been suggested it could be a fuel vacuum in the tank but why no ignition lights for a few minutes??

I'm stuck and help would be appreciated.

Thanx

Tonty

Hi Tonty, rekon you should have put this in the maintainance section and not the mags, pics n stuff section. Still I do hope someone can help with your problem mate. Try Roadhoover. He is a mind of good information, if not him then Blackdog

Don't slide unless you mean too.

Be sure, ride safe and enjoy

If it hadn't been for the ign light going out, I would have said fuel supply problem, possibly vacuum in the fuel tank. But if the lights going out coincides with the engine stopping, it's got to be electrical. Lecky problems are the worst to solve, because they are often intermittent. You've done the obvious things - new plugs, leads etc - which would have been my first suggestion.

The only other thing I could suggest is to carry a pair of insulated pliers in your back pocket, and next time it cuts out, pull the plugs one by one, run the starter, and see if you get a spark. If I had to make a guess, I would say the most likely thing is the coils breaking down with heat, and weakening the spark. I had this happen on an old Land Rover. I had replaced all the ignition components - every one - and took it for a run to a meet in North Wales. A hundred miles from home, it started to stutter and cut out, although not to the point of stopping. Luckily I had all the old components in the back (caution born of long experience!) and swapped the coil back. Problem solved. Turns out the "new" coil was faulty, while the 35-year-old one was fine, but the fault only came to light after a long run with considerable heat in the engine bay. If that sounds like your problem, then perhaps swap the coils with ones you know to be good. Thinking about it, if the coils are breaking down, you will probably still get a spark of sorts, so the pulling-the-plugs thing may not be conclusive.

Second thoughts: falty coils may or may not cause the light to go out. Not sure on your bike. Perhaps also look for dodgy wiring in the ignition circuit which may be responding to heat or moisture, causing the insulation to break down and short the signal out. If it's a doggy old bike with previous-owner bodges in the wiring, then a good visual check might be advised. When it stops next time, pull off the seat or whatever and have a good old waggle of the wiring.

I concur with BD. I had an XJ550 once that worked fine when cold but as soon as it was hot fizzled out and refused to start, usual story, plugs, caps, leads and then coil. Lashed out for a new coil after advice from a mechanic and it was no better. Finally traced it back to the black box, shed loads of money later good as gold. I dread to think how much one of these would cost if it comes to it so like BD says check thoroughly all the wiring, connections, fuse box etc before you spend any more hard earned. You seem to have done the obvious things so it's just a process of elimination now, tiresome job I'm afraid specially if you need to use the bike.

best of luck mate, let us know how you get on. P.s. if you need decent quality used parts try partfinder.co.uk. saved a bundle myself when I cracked the bottom yoke on the venerable 9R.

Thanks chaps,

I'll start working through the wiring, the bike is a bit rough round the edges and there are some DIY looking connectors so I've got lots to look at. I'll let you know. Despite this slight problem I still get out, such a good day here I rushed home from work today and has a half hour blast out, hands frozen when I got home though.

I'd like to find some people to ride out with occasionally who could teach me a bit more, any ideas how to find like minded people in the area?

Oh, Rebelman was right, this should've been in 'Maintenance', not sure how I stuck it here.

PS Saw a guy in Bristol other day with his UKBike.com T-shirt, how do I get 1?
