Agreed. I really don't mind riding at this time of year. People at work think I am crazy and assume the car is broken, and when I tell them that I am warm and dry and enjoying the ride, they shuffle away looking sideways. The main roads here are clear and clean (mostly) but there's a lot of cr*p on the sides, especially the minor roads, of mud and wet leaves. Lethal, if you're not paying attention.

Your point about dialling into the conditions is a good one. This is the time of year to keep your skill levels up, and not let them go rusty over the winter. Really cold (0 or below), foggy or high winds, and I will probably take the car - otherwise, it's two wheels all the way.

Seconded! Although the roads are OK at the moment here - there's been enough rain to wash all the surface grime away. No shortage of idiot drivers, though...

Apart from that, I do like riding at this time of year. In many respects it's just as satisfying to dial in to the adverse conditions as it is to get some reckless thrashing done in the dry, I reckon.

I've visited a friend who's moved to Mallorcaa couple of weeks ago. Georgeous area lovely people & my Spanish has been comming on a treat.

God I wish I was there right now rather than sitting in the office while it chucks it down by the bucketload.

At least I'll be getting wet on the way home

If I went anywhere, it would definitely be going native - fluent in the language and independent. I can't see the point of leaving the UK, only to team up with the kinds of people I spend my life trying to avoid over here. The friend I met over there lent me some of the ex-pat 'newspapers' that circulate over there. They made the Daily Mail look like the Morning Star, and the parish magazine look like The Face. The people I met out there fell into two groups - the miserable moaners, who were generally poor French speakers and had as little as possible to do with the French, and the happy successful people, who were usually never there, because they were meeting French friends and doing French-type things. I know which group I would be in.

Sounds rather nice, but don't you have to be rich to live on Jersey? Or is that Guernsey? If so, that lets me off the hook...!

Think I'd rather move to Italy than France, perhaps, although I'm not sure that you get the same sort of ex-pat communities there so it really would have to be a case of going native. Maybe one day...

I go to France quite often for around £50 return, hoping one day to live there, at least I can look around and find somewhere nice before I decide

Hah, this was a temporary two-week emigration to try to find some sun. Epic fail on that score. On a serious note, I met a lot of people out there (Perigord, middle of France, very pleasant and rural) who had 'escaped' from the UK, and it made me seriously think about getting out. Every single one of them said that they had no regrets at all.

But for the time being, I am still here!

According to the BBC, Wales had its wettest August since records began. What a time to launch a new holiday village!

After a wet summer, a wet winter and another wet summer, I escaped to France in September hoping to find some sun and warmth. We had two weeks of rain there too - only the rain was warmer.

I hear Australia is nice.

Well, this should please Blenk...if "please" is actually the right word for it.

Apparently, this summer had as much total rainfall as the average British winter. It was the same last summer - and last winter, too, come to that.

So if anyone's feeling wetter than usual, that's probably the reason - we've just had three monsoon seasons on the trot!

It's looking sunny and pleasant today, though.

No fair - another weekend of work for me. Sometimes that's just how it goes, but the next half-decent weekday will see me conveniently forgetting all my project deadlines and bunking off to harass the tarmac...

Hope those of you who do get out this weekend have a damn good time. I won't be sulking at all if it's beautiful and sunny, honest...!

I'm hoping with all this bad weather now that we are going to have a heat wave very soon, with a bit of luck the next two weeks will be great.

Yep it's raining here too up Retford way. I would have been out today but the XT needs a clean so that's what I'll be doing. Of course when that's done then I might just go for a little foray provided Mrs Spartan doesn't have anymore 'urgent' jobs for me to do!!!

One thing I like about rain is washing the cars and my bike is made easier in the rinsing department leaving not a single streak when dried off when the weather turns for the better LOL I go out in my waterproofs and wash 3 cars and the bike if its out and let the rain rinse them off, saves getting the hose out!

It's knees for me: ache when it's merely cold, go like two bags full of sharp gravel when it's cold AND wet. Dropped on 'em one too many times, I guess. Had the central heating on this week too, for that very reason.

Mind you, dodgy circulation/joints/hearing and all - if I had my time again, I'd still choose to ride bikes. Just have to hope that by the time they're all proper knackered, medical technology will have caught up and I can grow a new pair.

Blenk, just curious - if you sell other bikestuff on eBay, is it still VAT-exempt like regular purchases on Jersey? If so and there aren't any import duties, that could work out quite a bargain.

The bloody weather is incorrigible. I don't have huge opportunities to ride strictly for pleasure, but I managed to persuade the wife to jump on the back of the venerable Nine last week after a blisteringly warm day, an opportunity to slaughter a few thousand flies, short blast to Hawkhurst from Hastings in East Sussex and then back for a pie via Battle.

Sister bribed to babysit, kids glued to the telly, leathers on and then a broiling of the heavens and within minutes a Tolkienesque battle sky descended spitting silver bullets at us, hadn't even made it to the effin garage.

Still bollox to the weather, we got a bit damp but finally managed to outrun the cloud after about five or six miles. Don't know about you lot, but it's the cold affectimg me at the mo, the dodgy ankles always a sure sign, they've ached like feck for the last coupla days, had to switch the central heating back on. It's hard being a crippled lizard!

Ebay is slow but I have only just started selling them.
Trying to make a few extra quid while I save for the next bike, I am going for quick turnover sooner than ripping people off, i would sooner make 500 X 50p than 25 X £10 so people get a bargain and I don't hang around with things for months on end.
I might start selling things from the bike shop as I get a very good discount at work!

It wasn't nice here yesterday. It was today. But since I spent the whole weekend at work, the only difference was that cigarette breaks were a little drier...

I wouldn't mind so much, but it was a weekend of taking mighty strides backwards on one of my projects, so very little consolation all round.

Hope you made a profit on eBay, at least!
