Richa textile suit

Just a few observations about the textile suit I have been wearing since January.

Richa Albatross two-piece, jacket and salopette-type trousers. Jacket £180, trousers £120, I think. A lot of money, but well worth it.

Good:

looks great - black and grey with a few dabs of reflective material
feels good quality, quite heavyweight materials, chunky zips
waterproof (so far, in 3 months' winter commuting in Wales)
fits well (because jkt/trs are sold separately, I could get different sizes for top and bottom halves)
warm with fitted thermal lining (totally warm over t-shirt and jeans in January)
Velcro straps to adjust fit on waist and arms
millions of pockets - haven't found all of them yet
zip vents on the front for warmer weather
top part of salopettes can be zipped off to leave ordinary trousers
armour to shoulders, elbows, back, hips and knees, very comfy and doesn't get in the way, stays where it should
all linings can be taken out, everything is hand-washable

Less good:

Velcro fastener at neck can rub against your neck and irritate (neck tube cures this)
with top part of salopettes removed, cannot zip trousers into jacket
long zips on legs, but still can't put on over boots as toes/heels snag on lightweight lining
thermal lining to trousers too bulky to wear over jeans, so I've removed it - still warm enough, though
gussets behind zips are all lightweight nylon, and therefore often get caught in zip (common problem with a lot of gear IME)
back protector is semi-rigid, better than the foam pad you get with many jackets, but is still less robust than the CE protection in the other places.

Materials are not Goretex/Cordura (the best names), but it all seems to be good from what I can see. I never thought I would feel as safe in textiles as I used to in full leathers, but I feel well-protected in this suit. And warm and dry too. A 3-hour ride in the pouring rain will be the ultimate test, but so far I am happy with the performance and regard it as money well spent.

My wife has threatened to attack it with Tipp-ex, to add R and D to the name on the back (that's my first name), but that won't be a problem for Nigels, Kevins, etc.

Highly recommended.

Broken Jacket Zip

So I was riding home on Thu when I realised there was a rather cold breeze flowing rather freely through my jacket and into my chest. "Damn it" I thought, "I've forgotten to do up my jacket!" So I pull over to do the thing up when I realise that the zip is at the top... and it's got both sides of the jacket in it!.... Oh no!

My beloved Frank Thomas Jacket has decided to give up on me and be a right pain in my ***! The zip has gone. It basically won't zip up and hold together, instead it undoes itself from the middle causing drafty holes and hold lot more surface area to hurt if I were to come off.

Any one here know how to fix this problem?

Polarised shades and GSX-R?

Has anyone experience of a GSX-R1000 K7/K8 instruments and Polaroid / polarised sunglasses? Can you read the LCD?

I'm tempted by a pair of Sunwise (Freefall/Rush/Windrush) shades with grey Chromafusion lenses - their rimless design looks good for peripheral vision, and polarised photochromatic lenses sound ideal...

...but not if I can't see the speedo

Haircuts

Not strictly gear, I know, but I couldn't find a "grooming" section!

Having avoided getting my hair cut for 6 months or so, and not fancying the usual "number-two-all-over" I started to think about what hair I could have, and still get away with wearing a helmet every morning. Aside from having no hair or waiting for it to be long enough to pony tail, are there any other styles (or crafty techniques) I can try to avoid turning up at the office looking like an electrocution victim?

Well its coming up to winter & my old gloves have just about reached the end of there life,so I am on the look out for a decent pair of warm & waterproof winter gloves . Anybody got any thoughts as to which make are the best to go for?

Brightona 2008 this Sunday!

This Sunday, the south coast will be swamped with bikes as the Brightona 2008 show comes to Madeira Drive, along Brighton seafront.

Last year's event was a great success - over £20,000 was raised for the Sussex Heart Charity, and the organisers are hoping to build on that figure with this years donation.

Brightona 2008 promises to be even bigger and better, with a full line-up of live music across two stages and at the nearby Concorde2, plenty of stalls and a bigger range of custom bikes on display.

textile gore-tex or leather

Hi All

A few months ago I bought some Frank Thomas textile jacket and trousers cheapo titanium range. I'm very impressed with the jacket which does everything very adequately but as for the trousers, they seemed to let me down. Soon as I put the trousers on I seem to have a swimming pool around my never regions. Always been used to having leathers in my over 20 years of riding but thought it was time to upgrade and move with the times. SO got a query, does any one have the problem with textiles making you sweat too much and does gore-tex have the same problem of making people sweat buckets? Soon as the textile trousers went on I felt like the advert for that Lynx deoderent were he keeps spraying everyone. My good old trusty leathers don't do any of this too me, but unfortunately aren't waterproof. So whats the verdict textiles, gore-tex or leather

on the "summer" zip, and not the zip 2" to the left which is meant for winter riding, with hundreds of thick jumpers underneath.

This is the first time I have been able to do this in 13 years. My recent diet is working.

Just thought I'd share that small success with you all.

Sports Luggage

I ride a CBR 600F and am looking to buy some form of luggage. I don't want anything to lrage but just big enough to fit a couple of days worth of gear in. Has anyone ridden with a tank bag on? Out of interest would anyone reccomend any form of soft luggage for a sports bike be it tail pack or tank bag and if so which one.

New helmet

I've done what I promised myself and bought a new helmet for winter duties. It's a Shoei XR1000 and I like it. I got it off eBay at roughly half the price of a new one, as it is in last year's graphics and is obviously old stock.

It has a Pinlock on the visor for anti-misting duties. This actually works.

Pinlocks rock a big one.

Body armour?

When I was last into biking, body armour was worn by pro racers and a few committed (in both senses) road riders of exotic machinery. No-one I rode with ever wore it, and I never saw it in dealerships etc.

Now I returning to biking, it seems that all the clothing advertised in the comics features built-in body armour. If anyone wears body armour routinely, I would be interested to know your thoughts - is it comfy to wear? Can you get it on under standard leathers? What sort of protection does it give?

I am due to get some new waterproofs before too long, and any info would be helpful.

Having to commute to work these days in all weathers (back to the halcyon days of my youth) I have been very impressed with my Ixon 'Revolt' jacket. I've had it for over a year but never really had to test it out in anger until recently. For a really modest priced jacket it's fantastic, light, warm and so far 100% waterproof. Nice one IXON will certainly check the range when I need to replace kit.

Anyone got one of these?

I bought my mine at the Excel show in London (£165... bargin!) and it's a very nice helmet. The problem I'm having is with the wind getting in. My head is constantly cold and I have a draft coming in from somewhere (nice in the summer months but we're not there yet) The vents aren't open anywhere but still, the problem occurs.

I was wondering if this is normal and if anyone else has this?
