My old Guzzi is up for sale and is definitely a reluctant one. I don;t want to get rid of it at all-but money is needed.

My job is half personnel and half H&S, but my job title is Personnel Officer - for a classified advertising paper. I travel to your part of the world to visit my Head Office. It's quite close to where you work, I think. If you want a job working for my company, you only have to apply ...

I'm Personnel Officer for an advertising company. I do actually do a fair bit of work (!), but on the days when I am desk bound, it is easy to pop onto this site and see what's going on in my break and lunch times. Since I stopped smoking, I tend to take my breaks at the desk [1] to avoid temptation, so I have a bit of time to spare to log on here and chat to you guys.

[1] I call it "dining al desco".

If you're giving up biking because someone you know has been killed, then it's not really a reluctant sale. It's a "someone give me some dosh for this because I'm frightened" sale.

As far as I can see, there are only four genuine reasons to write "reluctant sale" in an advert:

You have lost a limb or developed a serious illness that is going to mean you are physically unable to ride despite wanting to
Your partner has said "it's me or the bike" and you are so spineless that you have given in
You have lost your job/been made bankrupt/are in debt to the local drug dealer and need the cash more urgently than you need to continue riding
You need to run a car for family or work reasons and your circumstances mean you can no longer run both.

I've seen a few ads on eBay and in the comics recently which have included phrases such as "getting too old at 72" (that was for a bad-*** chopper, too), "muscles will no longer co-operate" and "long-term illness forces sale". Those I genuinely feel sorry for.

Theres a bike for sale on e-bay atm that is another 'reluctant sale'. But i think he's actually genuine, as he says the reason he's selling up is because his wives brother has just been killed on a bike

As devistating as it is, i doubt i'd give it up if i was in the same boat. Fair play to him though. But something like this is so rare, would you really be any safer...

As for other sellers. I think most of them just copy each others description as they don't know what to say!!

Just wondered why people use this meaningless phrase in their bike and car adverts. After all, if they were that reluctant, surely they wouldn't be selling it at all. I guess it is a fake attempt to introduce some desirability into the deal - come and see it, and see if you can persuade me to let go. Another one is "genuine reason for sale". I suppose most bikes and cars are sold with a false reason for sale, then? My favourite is "company car forces sale". Aha, so your employer is making you take a company car, under the threat of the sack, and the deeds of your house stipulate that you may not keep more than one car on the premises? I mean, come on. And don't forget "desirable" and "rare model".

Here are some genuine ads for you:

BMW R90/7, lovely old bike, used to be reliable, but there's so much wrong with it now that I've decided to cut my losses. I'll be sorry to see it go, but the feeling of sheer relief will compensate for that, so I suppose in a way I am reluctant to sell it. I'll still play hard to get if you make me an offer, though.
Kawasaki GPz900R, fast and furious, lots of history, genuine reason for sale - the electrics have been bodged and I can't get it to run properly. It's a complete shed and I'm getting out of biking altogether.
Ford Sierra 1.6, silver, new tyres, recent service, I've got a new job and they're giving me a BMW, so if you think I am swanning around in this boat anchor after the first of next month, you've got another think coming.
Triumph Herald saloon, desirable classic, it's a money pit and it's broken my heart and wallet, but Classic Car says that people are queueing up to buy them, so I'm adding a nought onto the price I paid ten years ago.
Francis Barnett Butterfly, 1937, very rare model, I've spent the last 6 months on the internet trying to track down a crankshaft and exhaust and I've failed, but there are only three left in the world and I'm sure there is an obsessive "collector" somewhere who will pay way over the odds for a rusty old nail like this.

Let's be honest - you're selling because you want rid.

Yamaha XS500 - quite a nice bike, but I'm bored with it and want something faster.
BSA A10 - complete wreck, think of it not as a purchase but as a project.
