The result: I have been alllowed to install a second vehicle next to my svelte and - most importantly - black Gixxer. It is (cue drum roll)...a Yamaha Tedium 850.

Purchased for a bargain few hundred of your Earth pounds from a mate at work (the same mate, in fact, whose ER-5 I crashed and subsequently bought a few years back. Didn't crash this one, though. Not yet, anyway). He's going back to his roots by purchasing an original Lambretta, wanted shot of the TDM, which has been playing him up for a few months now. Being a reasonable chap, he offered it to me at way less than private sale price, given that it still - after several trips to the garage - had a mystery misfire going on and was, to be kind, a little on the tatty side.

Well, it's still tatty and probably going to stay that way, given that a) it's a 10-year old Yam and b) I hate cleaning vehicles. However, a couple of days stripping, fettling and testing have identified the misfire as a knackered secondary winding on coil 2. One replacement (£50!!!) later and it's as good as (not very) new. Sage advice in the garage - when you're sure it's a fuelling problem, that's when you know it's really electrical. Thought I'd fixed it with fuelling adjustment after day one, no misfire - out for a quick spin, feeble acceleration and maxed out at 85 mph flat-stick: realise then that it's not actually doing too bad for a 425cc single...
Anyhow, it's a big, fat old thing, the clocks are something like 15 yards away from the rider and the engine's a lumpy torque-monster that keeps ambushing me with a rev-limiter...but it's an absolute laugh to hoon around on. With a bit of luck, my winter hack is now sorted!

Transport Policy Consultation

Anyone with a few minutes spare time and a desire to have their input ignored should consider taking a look at the DfT "A Safer Way" consultation on http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/roadsafetyconsultation/.

It's the paper laying out the third of the government's transport visions, covering - potentially - the next 20 years and focussing primarily on road safety. Of course, there is a heavy emphasis on speed, including some alarming desires to reduce yet more limits yet further. More alarming is the implied but not stated requirement for yet more surveillance to enforce and monitor it all. More sticks, still no carrots and another burgeoning mass of nanny-stateism, in my opinion.

Anyway, I have no idea what weight my personal input carries (somehere between zero and none, I suspect), but if you don't speak up it certainly doesn't ever get heard! There's a multi-choice on-line questionnaire or you can e-mail a more in-depth statement if you wish. I had to, in order to make the point that I don't want the government to have a primary target to protect motorcyclists. One thing I'm very sure of is that it won't result in anything that improves life from the actual motorcyclist's perspective...!

On The Other Hand, The Happy Corner

There are some truly brilliant things about bikes; as the great Colin Schiller once explained his epiphany in words something like "I just ****ing love motorcycles!". Not his most erudite statement, but without doubt from the heart!
One of those would be The Noise (although not the Peter Hammill album of the same name, which is still recommended for a listen anyway).

I live beside the A259, a fairly dreary stretch of one-and-a-half-lane blacktop in overcrowded urban Sussex. There's a steady hum of traffic maybe 18 hours of the day, mostly dealt with by the double glazing, broken by the occasional howl of a proper engine. Lovely, especially when (usually late at night) you can hear the pilot really going for it on and off the roundabouts. Some nights (sorry officer, couldn't help myself) that'll be me - don't know if my neighbours appreciate it in the same way, though!

Fair play to the manufacturers in fact, for having managed - despite the increasing regulations - to make bikes sound good again. One of the nicest things about my GSXR is how it sounds: a mixture of induction howl and snarling, surprisingly loud for standard, exhaust. Wind it up to the redline and it is just vehicular rock'n'roll plugged straight into the adrenal gland. (I sometimes wonder, on the daily commute, how much resentment from the four-wheelers is down to carving through their static lines and how much is because it looks and sounds like it's fun doing it?).

Favourite road bike noise of all, in my opinion, was my VFR750FP with a Micron 'zorst of gasometer proportions, untroubled by any kind of baffling whatsoever. The offbeat lilt of a V-Four amplified to enormous levels, gear-driven cams whining like a circular saw and a noise like World War III on the overrun...damn, that was nice...

Manx Hornet Built over winter

Before

After

UKBike.com are looking for blog writers!

Hi everyone, I'm Tom from the UKBike.com team.

We are looking to launch our new blog soon, which will highlight the latest bike reviews, news and video items, information on UK bike events, and updates from UKBike.com.

Our blog is also a platform for quality writing. Then there were the exceptions - Kawasaki's mental 500 and 750 triples, Suzuki's 750 kettle and Honda's 50/70/90cc step-thoughs come to mind.

The great thing about a 2-stroke is that it delivers twice as many power strokes as a 4-stroke per revolution, although in a less efficient way. This meant that, cc for cc, a 2-stroke could give about 150-170% of the power of the equivalent 4-stroke. For racing bikes, there was only one choice, and racing was dominated in the Grands Prix of the 70s by monster 500cc strokers. The low-down grunt of a 2-stroke single made them popular choices for trials as well. Highly-tuned (with wild porting and tuned exhaust), a 2-stroke made power like no other: nothing for the first half of the rev counter, then a sharp power band leading to a mad rush for the horizon, accompanied by a banshee howl and another 3 points on the licence.

I know that emissions legislation has killed almost all of them off, but I loved 'em. As far as I can see, only Aprilia still make them, and then only for learners. Damn shame. If I'm passed by a 2-stroke, I have been known to follow it for miles, just sniffing the blue haze they leave in their wake.

That's all.

50cc bikes

hey everyone my names kit ive just got this, and i wanted to know if anybody happends to have a 50cc moterbike road legual which isnt a ped one with gears, reasonable price under 1k would be good, if anyone has one and is selling please message me, it might be a bit befor i do because i got to find out how lool!

cheers guys kit

A Corner To Rant In

Here's a mild starter - rubbish stickers.
Even now, in top-secret R&D bunkers all over Japan, technicians are finalising their latest CBGSRXYZ10000RRR hyperbikes with the following checklist:

- Does it carry more electronic gizmos than the space shuttle? Oh, yes

- Is it dripping with hyper-trick race-derived exotica? Absolutely every component now has full racing pedigree

- Can it do 95 on one wheel in first and is it only the rev limiter stopping it from breaking the 186mph limit? 97, actually

- Have we made it as wind-tunnel pointy and dangerous as an Exocet missile? Surely have

- Is it painted in either ultra-cool stealth-fighter black or in-your-face dangerous primary colours? Body shop's worked overtime on this one

- Right, then, it's ready - best get Akira from 'elf'n'safety to plaster it with them stupid bright orange warning stickers before we ship it! Righto, boss

And so, every flat surface carries a superfluous warning of some sort: "Always Wear Your Helmet!" They are offering non-existent quad bikes and motorbikes for sale

At present the email of the "salesman" is:
brooke.timothy@yahoo.com (those emails come from the USA)

He will advise you that the shipping company will be in touch and that your money will be placed in escrow until your bike is delivered and you are happy with it.

The website of the shipping company is:
international-shipping-express.com
the site is offline at present. Husband aka Parker, had his pride and joy stolen on Weds night Thurs morning from right outside the back door, with a locked gate, 3 dogs and us to contend with they picked his bike up took it out of the garden and as of yet there is no sign of her, I know its nieve to think she will come back in one piece cos we both know she wont, we have phoned Honda UK to see if anyone has tried or to let them know that she has been taken and if anyone is after an ECU or steering barrel the chances are its nicked, I have also phoned the local dealers here in Peterborough to give them the heads up, luckily we are well known around here for bikes (think having a pink XT) helps....

If anyone has any info or is suspicious of anything please let me know on 07990 995122 or the police, she was a CBR1000rr WX04BEU, scratch on back tail piece, cracked on left hand fairing around the indicator, she had Laser twin cans under the seat, CRG black short levers, and the usual R & G crash bobbins, braided hoses all the way round.

Here is a pic of our lost baby...

Choices, Choices .........

Hi folks, just the age old question to answer here - Which bike do i go for next?

I'm asking for your help, cause ... well to be honest ... my head is pickled trying to work this out.

Basically i cant make my mind up as to what to buy. I like both the adventure tourer style (e.g. TransAlp, F650GS, Pegaso) and also have a bit of a thing for the old sports style (ZX, CBR, Daytona, etc). I'm not a speed freak (well not much of one) but do like to know that the grunt is there if i need it to be. Put it this way i'd rather go slow and look good than go fast and nobody see me - lol.

I've had a selection of both styles in the past, but as the money is scarce at the Mo and the need to be on the road while the sun is still shining (if it ever stops raining) is ever evident in my mind, i need to be making motions towards making a choice and getting a bike.

I'm looking for something 1998-2003'ish, something that i can use for local fun and commuting, but also break loose at the weekends and over the holidays and get away for a bit.

Power - Yes, but no need for excessive power; Low'ish seat heights an advantage (I dont like standing over a bike looking like i'm trying to straddle a razor-wire fence on tip-toe - lol); looking for something 600cc to 900cc; and the number one priority (due to an old injury) is to keep the weight down as much as possible (anything under 200Kg is ideal).

On my watch list are:
Triumph Daytona.
ZX6, 750 and 9.
GSXF / GSXR
Thundercat.
CBR 6 and 9.
Pegaso.
F650GS.
TransAlp.
Duke (seat height?).

Come on people, give me your input; what have you owned/ridden? What way would you go?

Any and all 'Constructive' input welcomed.

JP.
Honda 400 Project Big 1

Help. He's just bought himself a beautiful CBR 600 FW in Black and orange. we went for a blast yesterday, hit Brighton, turned left and followed the coastal route towards Eastbourne. A few nice twisty turns and plenty of revs had us chuckling with delight!

We'd come across a sweet sweeping left hander that snapped sharply to the right. I'd nearly lost it going in but controlled it with the rear brake, got round and carried on. I'd not noticed if Phil had gotten round or not but upon looking in my mirror and not seeing him I pulled over into a bus stop to wait. A minute passed and I was starting to fear the worst. "Maybe he got caught up in traffic" I tried to convince myself. Then a car came along. "That's not right, that should be Phil, he was right behind me! If they pull up next to me then there is something definately wrong and he's lost it somewhere. Sure enough, the indicator came on and the car pulled up beside me. Then I heard exactly what I didn't want to hear... "He's crashed"

I turned around and whizzed back up the hill again. "S**t s**t s**t" I'm cursing, "I hope he's ok". Visions of a body being sprawled across the road was constantly running through my mind. I realised I was panicing and I had to force myself to stay calm otherwise I'd loose it too and that won't help either of us. I creasted the top and saw him... standing there with a mug of tea and smiling! "Oh thank the biking Gods" I breathed as I pulled up. "You ok mate?" I asked quickly "Yeah I'm good, the bike's in a bit of a state though! Whoops" and we both started laughing, probably nervously to begin with, noting how close he'd come to serious injury, but then in genuine humour as we realised that he'd come that close, and walked away.

I asked what happened and he explained he went round a bend too quickly, had to break to avoid hitting me and the car ahead (which had slowed me right down!). He grabbed too much front brake, the bike stood up and he went onto the verge, over a 5ft mount of grass, launched off the end and landed but couldn't hold it. He dumped it, slid along the floor and ended up next to it!

Fairing on the right is scratched but still intact. The re****ts on the exaust side is bent and sheared. The Exaust came out of the engine section but it was held together with a jubilee clip so slipped it back on (but is still in need of repair, we basically bodged it back on so we could get home). Indicators, mirror shattered and we think the top yoke is unalined with the front forks now, although it still goes in a straight line!... We spent the next hour trying to sort out what we could and sitting at the side of the road relaxing. Luck played a bit part in this drama as he ended up in a layby so we weren't in the road hindering traffic. Smoke time I think! Thanks to Roadhoover for his assistance. After realising we needed more professional advise I called him and he talked us through what we need to check and sort out before limping home. trust me guys, he's a Bike Guru!

Fortunately Phil only suffered a grazed hip. His leathers, Draggin Jeans and helmet look generally unscathed. Infact, his helmet doesn't even look like it hit the floor! He came off at about 20-30 mph but I bet it must've felt like 200!

One thing I did notice is that being a biker suddenly makes so many more people your friend! A group of about 6 bikes came passed us and slowed right down to make sure we were ok. Each and every one of them gave us a thumbs up and a nod or wave, but we said we were fine and so they carried on. A camper van pulled over and the driver had a CBR of his own and offered assistance. The kind lady round the corner who gave Phil a cup of Tea was very hospitable, offering us use of her phone and kettel facilities! Although the circumstances weren't exactly great, it was reassuring to know that so many people were willing to stop and help. You really do join an exclusive club when you pass your test.

So there you go, first serious accident of my biking career. Phil has said he's going to mount the number plate on his wall (oh yeah, that came off too!) as a tally. Everytime he bins it he'll by a new plate and mount the old one on the wall to keep count!!

Bug Bears

Yesterday I was riding to see my Girlfriend (who's just come back from a 5 week trip around Europe) but had to stop at Tesco's first to pick up some bitsa nd pieces. On my way I cut though an industrial estate and as I round a corner I have about 6 peds and a Honda NSR 125 parked at the side of the road. I thought nothing of it, but the NSR felt it would like to try and race a 600cc 80bhp Yamaha Fazer to the end of the road.

Now, I thought this was funny, very funny in fact, as he was tucked up under his screen and was one handed looking around at him trying to keep up. Whenever he got close I just pulled away a little more (the road was straight with no other traffic so I decided to have some fun with him)... But it wasn't the fact an audatious NSR 125 rider thought he'd look bug in front of his mate by trying to keep up with me, its what the particular rider was wearing at the time that got me going... Shorts and T-Shirt. This has to be my biggest problem with Learners... those who think they are INVINSABLE and forgetting they are INVISABLE. You've come off your pedal bike as a kid, we all have, and that was at about 10mph. Did it hurt? Yeah it did!!!! Now double, triple and in some cases quadrouple that speed, wear your shorts and t-shirt and come off? I think I posted up about a young fella who come off and bled to death because he wasn't wearing the correct safety gear. PLease please please 'ped riders... wear the correct gear!

Now, that was one event in what proved to be an exciting ride to my ladies domain. I pulled into Tescos and rode to the bike park... only to discover that a four wheeled monstrosity had parked its fat **** right in bay. "Oh my god!" I exclaimed. I looked at it in disbelief that somebody could be so stupid. I wish I took a picture because the sign that said motorcycle parking was waving above the car. "What to do?" I thought. "Genious! I'll park right up against the door so they can't get back in!! Hahaha, that'll show 'em!!" So that's what I did.

As I dismounted and started removing gloves and helmet the security officer came over to me (he just happened to be an old friend from college who also rides) and he said he'd get the plate number of the car and get them to move it. I thanked him, but I really wanted to see what the driver would have done/said once I had finished my shopping and went to move off. The driver came out, apollogised and claimed she didn't see the sign (Pah!) and parked up somewhere else.... Notch up one for the little guy!

So, two bug bears of mine. I have more but I want to hear your ones. What are they? What did you do about it? What were the repercussions?

Looking for Japanese Used Bikes from Japan ??

Get free access to view hundreds of dealers, exporters, suppliers, auction agents in Japan dealing in Bikes, Motorcycles and its Spare Parts.
For more details visit our website: http://www.japanautopages.com/category/index.php

Company Listing & Trade Offer services are free of charge. The rear caliper has siezed (it hasn't been ridden in a while), needs a new battery and the tyres or slightly over the hill. A few thou on them and I'll need to change them. It's not been ridden as it's only summer mileage and the guy I bought it from has failing eye sight. 'Best sell it before I ride it again' he said. Sensible but sad. MOT and TAX had lapsed (declared of the road though) but it sailed it's MOT and tax is £45 approx.

Funnier still, it's exactly the same as my dads bike, same colour, engine, reg... which worries me slightly as it seems I'm turning into him at the age of 22... he's 50 odd!

Still, I've yet to ride my bike yet but I have ridden my dads so I know the power and manouverability of it.

YZF 600 R

Hey all. I seem to remember reading something like that.

Any help and advice would be good.

Wahey, 100 posts!!!

You have gota start some where

I have already done a post about what i am about to say but it was in the wrong section so i am going to start again

Rite i am 15 years old and i am looking for a good 50cc bike that is fast and reliable and dose not look anything like a scooter or a mini bike.

It also has to be under a grand i.e £1000

Any idas will be gr8.

Next Bike

This looks as good a place as any to post this....

Currently my 125 is great, but it's too slow. I'm planning on passing my test shortly and I'm looking for a new bike. I'm completely taken by VFR 400 NC35's. I love them. I've not riden one, just seen them about and everytime I turn my head and follow it... longing... dreaming. The problem is finding one that has a lowish milage and no been ragged to pieces.

I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions for my next bike. I'm looking for something sporty as I'd like to do track days. Between 400-600 ideally.

Any suggestions?

New Honda CB1300 forum

Hi,
just an invitation to our new forum if you are interested in the Honda CB1300 Big Bike.
http://www.hondacb1300.net
Thanks
